Terrace Standard – BCMA Spring series motocross race a success

The Terrace Motocross Association (TMA) kicked off its season with a spring series race April 30 and May 1.

The race, which is a sanctioned British Columbia Motocross Association (BCMA) event, is the first of two major races the association has planned for the year.

A total of 71 riders hit the track on Saturday, with 80 riders competing on Sunday.

The two-day competition hosted 13 races each day and 20 different classes of riders.

Sue Kawinski of the TMA said the race was a well attended success with ages ranging from four to 56 and lots of local riders getting involved.

“Way more local riders attended this year than last  year, so that just shows us the interest and the word is getting out,” Kawinski said.

“The Terrace riders did very well and many placed on the podium,” she added.

The TMA also hosted  childrens races on the kids’ track where riders as young as four can participate in 50 CC races.

“We are the only track in B.C. that has a kids track,” Kawinski said. “It’s good for parents to know that their kids have a safe environment to learn.”

The event was assisted by more than 20 volunteers as well as members from the Terrace Search and Rescue.

“I believe we have an incredible volunteer base,” Kawinski said, explaining this shows how much community support there is for motocross in Terrace.

The track recently underwent upgrades for this season, courtesy of the heavy equipment operators class from Northwest Community College.

The main track was improved for safety and fine tuning, the viewing platform was raised by 45 ft. and an ATV obstacle course was added.

The next big event for the TMA will be July 16- 17 when the track will host a banquet for the winners of the spring series.

It will also host its fall series race that weekend.

There will be more events on the track between now and the fall season BCMA race, which Kawinski said will be posted on the association’s Facebook page.
